Oh, wow, and I thought getting The State Within last year was awesome.

This year's assignment is not like last year's ("Oooh, TSW, I know that fandom. I know it well.") but it is twice as awesome because it's something I love like burning and I'm just - I've been incredibly lucky in that my Yuletide assignments have been super varied over the years.

This year? The most varied yet and I am. So. Pleased.

Which means I really need to get my Yuletide letter written. Perhaps a task for tomorrow.

Yuletide! *Artcrawl style fist-pump*

I really need to talk to someone who is at the level of around 4th year or masters or higher. I'm having trouble getting back into grad studies. My brain isn't on the right track right now and I'm not asking the right questions or having that sense of what a good thesis is.

I have to do a research paper. I don't even really remember what a research paper is with respect to other kinds of papers and my prof isn't being very much help. I'd like to bounce a few ideas off of someone who knows wtf they're doing and get suggestions on what to modify.

I'm not looking for people telling me things to look up or giving me specifics. Nor am I looking for someone to read a paper (paper's not written yet). I want to email people some ideas and then have them say things like "that's a good idea, but that's not a thesis" or "great, but what is your point?" only I'm already asking myself these questions. I need people to ask me the questions I'm not thinking of.

I also need to put together the framework of this paper in the next 2 days before I visit my prof on Monday, because when I visit him, I'm going to give him the outline of what I'm doing and then find out if I should be dropping the course (voluntary withdrawal date is Nov 18). So not only do I need someone to bounce ideas off of, I need them fast.

Anyone willing to lend me a hand?

My email is dreaded.night.turtle@gmail.com

Hey ladies (and gents!)

I've got two questions:

1. Does anyone have any recommendations for either books or online tutorials for hand stitching? My hand stitching is awful and I would really like to improve it!

2. Any recommendations for stenciling? I've been making purses with a demon girl cameo on the front (using hand cut stencil plastic and fabric paint), but I'm having a hard time getting the paint to stay IN the stencil (and not blop out and ruin the silhouette). I'm also having a hard time getting details (like the eye lashes). I've tried using paint brushes and painting, miniature brushes for the small parts, rollers, squeegies, stamp brushes.. blah! Any recommendations would be very much appreciated :)

Note on the above: I also tried the method of using an embroidery hoop and organza with mod podge to fill out the non-stencil part, and paining in that but it also leaks a little. But honestly it might be me doing something poorly!

And so there is some visual niftiness, here's some things that I've made!

pictures of stuff! )

Thanks in advance! :)

I just found this community and am so excited!! I love sewing, especially stuffed animals/things for kiddos...I'm starting to get interested in quilting but haven't got a lot of time (full time student, part time job, soon to be mom...) at any rate, here are my latest projects!

Made for a little one celebrating his 1st birthday today: a Huckle Cat hat, made from a felted angora sweater and a Lowly Worm stuffed animal. Lowly is about 3ft tall and is all felt, all hand-sewn. The hat didn't end up looking as much like Huckle as I had imagined it would, but I am really excited about how Lowly turned out!

Hi...

I have started to make some little Amigurumi and since I don't have much money this year for gifts I thought I would make Amigurumi for my nephew...
now I have looked around and I haven't found something to help me much on my project... you see I am looking for a base pattern really beauce I want to make Astro as an Amigurumi I know someone did an Etsy for Astro the original version but my nephew only know the blue jacket version.

I'm pretty sure I can figure out the pointy parts by myself... but I would need a good base body... Any free patterns I could base this off?

Thank you for your help, I personally would like the old version of Astro but kids nowdays...if it's not close it's no cigar...

So my boyfriend has a proper job and they're doing a Christmas party. Said party is going to consist of cocktails, dinner, and dancing. As his significant other, I will be attending this party. It's on December 12.

But I have nothing to wear!

Not a huge problem, I can go shopping and buy something - assuming I can find something suitable and appropriate, that is. I'm a size 16-18 these days, so finding decent semi-formal clothing can be a challenge. Why do people think I should look like a house? I have a waist!

So, odds are good that I'll be sewing myself a dress. I've done such things in the past, but it's been a while. I can even adapt a pattern so that it fits me properly. However, I haven't got a dress form, so I'll be doing a lot of double-and-triple-checking for fit on myself.

As a result, what I would like to be able to do is find a pattern that is not going to require too many alterations in order to fit properly. I know that some patterns don't size out properly according to what the finished measurements say on the packaging, so I thought I'd ask here for some tips on how to choose a good pattern. I mean, first and foremost is design, of course (it has to be the right style for my body type), but it would be good to know ahead of time that, for example, the brand I chose tends to size small, so I should be making two sizes larger than I actually am according to their measurements. That sort of thing.

Thanks!

1. Tonight: Keeping Them Honest - Gitmo Detainees. Raw Politics - "Rogue" Sarah Palin. 360 Exclusive - Manson stuff.

I nearly missed the beginning there because someone just made available to me an episode of Janeane Garofalo's Air America radio show co-hosted by Stephen Colbert and I was listening to it. *coughs*

Anyway:

2. Keeping Them Honest - Holder made the announcement that they're trying 9/11 people in NYC soon.

And let the scaremongering chaos begin....now!

Talking Heads x 4 (ALL THE ANGLES!): Jeffrey Toobin (legal), Peter Bergen (International Guy), Joe Johns (news guy), Kirk S. Lippold (commander of a Naval ship that was attacked by terrorists).

Too many viewpoints. I can't be bothered paying attention.

After 10 minutes of people agreeing/disagreeing with each other Andy uses his first ~We'll have to leave it there~ since he got back from his holidays. (I want to point out that dear John King didn't use it at all, IIRC)

3. Randi Does the Bulletin: 360 Follow on a Congressman who had 90k stashed in his fridge (now charged in court or something). Fort Hood shooter Hasan is paralysed from the waist down. Talk about the Annie Le case. Heenes accept charges.

Um. Beat 360? That's a bit early. Picture is of the Heenes. Staff writer makes a Wolf quip, viewer winner make a LKL/Prejean joke.

4. Raw Politics - Going Rogue with Sarah Palin.

Candy Crowley with the details. This is how much I care about Sarah Palin right now: I'm going to go listen to more of that interview.

Bits that I've missed, via [info]themistoklis (Because her reactions are hilarious): "Oh someone please do sue Palin for libel" and "McCainiac?"

~Digging Deeper~ with Candy and John King (back from an odyssey across the US if his Twitter is to be believed).

5. Crime & Punishment: 360 Exclusive - Ted Rollins has the Manson stuff.

Recordings of stuff and new pictures and blah etc.

ETA: Uncovering America is Anderson talking to Vincent Bugliosi (the guy who wrote the definitive account of Manson's doings).

6. Randi covers the Bulletin 2: remnants of Ida still causing some chaos. 360 Follow - did that census worker suicide and stage the scene. 360 Follow - Nic Cage losing homes to foreclosure. NASA confirms water on the moon. CONFRIMS.

7. Tonight's Shot: from The Real Housewives of Somewhere. Oh, Anderson. You're so trashy.

And a replay of Carrie Prejean's stunt on LKL. Haha - Larry: Is she leaving because I asked about the motivation...?

Hi all,

I haven't sewed in awhile because both my machnes had problems. I've got them back now from the repair shop but I find once again that I'm having problems loading the bobbin of my Shark machine into the bobbin case so I can sew. It's a metal case bobbin that goes in in an up and down postion and all my life, I've used the drop in kind that lay flat. Every now and then, I've managed to get it installed correctly, but even looking at the directions that came with the machine doesn't really help. I've searched online too but can't find something to let me know what I do wrong that makes the bobbin fall out. There is a little lever on the metal bobbin case that you lift up and release as you install it, I think. Can anyone help me figure out what it is I'm doing wrong? I would be grateful eternally!

Thanks!

I'm an English Lit major, and my original plan is to graduate with the Honors program. If I want to do this, I need to take just about four more classes than is required for the major, graduate with a B+ average and get an A on my thesis. I can do that.... or I can just be a regular major, without the Honors.

The only reason why I would want to pursue with the Honors program is because I have a feeling it would look good on a job resume (for what kind of job, I have no idea). Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. I'm just two classes away from finishing the major and I'm so tempted to say... fuck it!

I'm just wondering who has had experience pursuing an Honors degree in English Lit, and if you think it really matters to your employer regular you're an Honors student or a regular ol' English major?

Someone recently asked about decoupage crafts...I don't have any current projects to share, but I did want to mention a decoupaging blog I found a few months ago: ModPodgeRocks. Amy features really cute projects and "modern" ways to use Mod Podge.

I created a syndicated feed on LJ so I could follow the blog on my friends list. If you're interested, go here and click on Subscribe in the upper right corner. New entries to the blog will start appearing on your f-list (when the RSS feeds are working on LJ, that is).

Early in the recording of My Chemical Romance's fourth album, the band gave mixer Rich Costey a preview. "Everything he heard was just noise and spitting," remembers singer Gerard Way.

Taken aback, Costey asked, "What are these songs?"

"They're protest songs," Way told him. "It's the sound of 'no.'" Only later did Way realized exactly what he was protesting: "I was protesting us."

After a grueling tour behind 2006's The Black Parade, MCR were worn out and fed up. "I thought the band was going to break up," says guitarist Frank Iero. "I was expecting a call from Gerard saying, 'We can't do it anymore.'" Instead, they took a year off and changed managers. This past February, they went into the old A&M studios in L.A. with Pearl Jam producer Brendan O'Brien.

"The plan was to knock it out and not to overthink it," says drummer Bob Bryar. They expected to be done by April, but the record ended up taking all year. The goal, Way says, was to drpo the theatricality of The Black Parade -- which had lots of Floyd-ian pomp an da Liza Minnelli cameo -- and "to harness everything that's great about this band into shorter songs. Almost protopunk, like the Stooges or the MC5."

The song that pushed them in the right direction was "Trans Am." It begins with the lyric "I got a bulletproof heart" and then stomps through four minutes of fist-pumping rock.

With that new direction -- impassioned but melodic -- MCR put aside the noisier material they had been working on and wrote a new batch of songs; the fast-and-dirty "Still Alice," the anthemic "The Only Hope for Me Is You" and the super-catchy "Death Before Disco" (featuring the chorus "Everybody pay attention to me"). "We simply embraced rock n' roll and where we're from," Way says. "We learned how to be an American rock band instead of a British rock band."

On an October afternoon in L.A., MCR are polishing the album. There's only a month or two of work left to do: some mixing, some overdubs, and sequencing. Today, Way is working on that pivotal cut, "Trans Am" -- which he thinks would be enhanced by "1.2 seconds of Queen."

So he warms up his vocal cords, slips on some headphones, and asks, "Can I get a little bit of reverb? Yeah, it's a crutch." then he sings, "These pigs are after me, after you" a dozen times, creating a "Bohemian Rhapsody" harmony. His performance is stylized, almost like a yodel. With a grin, he announced, "When I start sounding teenage-girlish, that's the sweet stuff."

Way's in a good mood, and not just because he's almost done with the record. In 2007, he married Lyn-Z (bassist for the band Mindless Self Indulgence); this May, they had a baby girl, Bandit. Way took two weeks off and then came back to work "like a zombie, long hair and unshaven." But fatherhood gave him a new perspective on his lyrics, which focused on despair and death. "I wasn't writing a record about becoming a dad, I wasn't writing a record for my baby girl, but I was writing a record for the person that she would turn into when she was 15, if anything ever happened to me."

Now would you want to cut very very close to the decal or leave some of the original fabric around it?

To attach it to my shirt, I am now going to put it on some white fabric, since my shirts white and sew it on there and also use iron on fusable webbing.

if some of you have done this before and have a better way of taking pre existing decals and stuff off baby clothing an putting it on a bigger shirt, so you can wear it please let me know.

Yes I have cross posted to other crafts to get a wider arena of replies, in case nobody replies in one group, or someone in another group has done or heard of what I am doing, and the other groups have not.
